Attleborough Music Project (AMP)
Our vision
Music provides many benefits such as positive mental health and improved wellbeing. We are delighted that here at St Mary’s Church, we have an incredible opportunity to provide a centre of musical excellence for the young and old from Attleborough, neighbouring villages and the wider Breckland district. This will enable people to learn and improve their music skills through playing, singing, and listening. As well as providing a music outreach programme for the community, by creating a music centre, we will be able to offer a concert venue at St Mary’s Church that is within the Breckland district. This venue will provide a host of benefits to the local community and enhance the cultural life of the town through music.
Purpose-built music centre and music outreach worker
Central to our vision is creating a new purpose-built music centre based at St Mary’s Attleborough, where expanded musical activities can take place, including concerts, teaching and outreach events. The project will also further enable more inspiring concerts and recitals to be held at St Mary’s over the coming years and create a space that can be used more flexibly for concerts and community activities.
We currently employ a specialist worker to lead engaging music outreach activities with children, the elderly and disabled people in our local community. See the AMP Voices page for details of just one of the projects underway.
Community space
Not only will we be creating a music centre, but we will also be creating a dedicated heritage display and research area for our church visitors and the Attleborough Heritage Group. We will also create new purpose-built vestries, a welcome space and a space for mission, outreach, and community activities with a particular emphasis on activities centred around music.
Since its construction 25 years ago, the church hall has been key to serving the local community, but it now needs additional facilities and space to support the town’s growing population and increased demands for community activities. The proposed music centre will therefore also accommodate the extra facilities needed to expand the care provision provided by the Attleborough Day Centre.
Concerts and recitals
We plan to develop St Mary’s Church by reinstating the former Mortimer Chapel and create new East end liturgical and concert layouts. This will enable more inspiring concerts and recitals to be held at St Mary’s with the provision of a grand piano and the creation of new moveable furniture for the east end of the church.
Rebuilding the organ
To enhance our existing activities, we will rebuild the 100-year-old pipe organ, which is at the heart of life within the Parish but now in a critical condition as many components are failing due to wear and tear. This project will ensure the effective working of the organ for another 100 years and preserve the heritage of our local “king of instruments”. Once rebuilt, the organ will be an exceptional instrument for services, concerts and solo recitals, thrilling audiences, congregations, choirs, performers and students alike. We will additionally expand our work to educate and support aspiring organists and choral singers by creating a scholarship scheme for young musicians.
We also aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the church and hall building by using renewable energy sources where possible. Additionally, we will complete all repair work for the church building that has been listed in the quinquennial report.
Overall, the Attleborough Music Project will make a lasting difference for heritage, people and our local community, with a musical legacy for future generations. We look forward to you joining us on this exciting journey!
