Let the bells ring out for Christmas!
We’re a bit late for Christmas 2024 but with your help we can have the bells at St Mary’s ringing regularly by the end of 2025.
For centuries bells have been used to call the faithful to worship, to warn of disaster or to celebrate local and national events. Our bells have, sadly, been largely silent for a number of years. Bell ringing is a skilled craft which requires one trained bell-ringer for each bell, which can be heavy work. Our bells are in good working order but are not regularly rung because of a lack of ringers.
There are six bells in the tower at St Mary’s, the earliest dating from 1581. The bells were restored in 1959. At some point in history an Ellacombe mechanism was added to the bells to allow all the bells to be chimed by one person pulling ropes on a rack. It is this mechanism which is the inspiration for our current appeal.
With your help we can raise £15,000 to add an electrically operated chiming mechanism to the bells which will allow us to ring them whenever the occasion demands with the press of a button, installed by the world renowned John Taylor and Co, Britain’s last remaining bell founders.
The chiming mechanism does not stop the bells being rung in the traditional way and we will still offer a welcome to visiting teams of ringers and maybe, one day, have our own team again.
Could you be one of 150 people to donate £100 to get our bells ringing again?
Your £100 could be given to celebrate a special occasion, because you were married at St Mary’s, to remember a loved one or simply because you’d like to hear the bells again.
