Choir Outing

25/2/2015

We had a great Choral Evensong last Sunday sung by St Mary's Choir. They are only the latest part in a long choral tradition. We've been given a photo of a choir outing to Great Yarmouth in 1950.

Wonderful to see this old photo (I still have copy somewhere). I was the first choir girl to be appointed at St. MARYS. Aged eight I think. Was very proud! Would love to near from whoever put this photo in? Haydn Hill was a marvellous organist and choirmaster and trained us well. I went on to a wonderful lifetime of choral singing and solo work. Thankyou whoever put this in. HILARY OTTER (Woods)

Dear Hilary, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Haydn Hill; he was my much loved grandfather and it has really touched my family to read your thoughts about him. Sarah

Lovely to see this picture and Hilary's comments. Haydn Hill was my dear father. I remember everyone on that photo and the lovely choir outings to Great Yarmouth. I must have joined the choir about a year later and remained part of it for ten years till I left to do my Nursing training in London. Those were happy times. Rosemary

Fascinating to see this delightful photo from the year of my birth. Haydn was my dearly missed father. Like my sisters, I became a chorister and many of the faces in the picture are fondly remembered. The candle lit Christmas Carol services were a major feature in the choir's calendar. As I grew, I moved from treble through contralto to bass. My wife, of almost 46 years, Ann and I first met singing at St Mary's. Many happy memories. Nick.

I am so glad to have brought back memories of the photo and thank you for your kind comments. Your father was my first choir master and did much in training to give me a life time of choral appreciation.
I went on to sing with many other choirs and enjoyed a lot of solo work. My husband too is very musical and a fine euphonium player and still plays with the local band. We have three daughters now grown up who sang together in close harmony at a very early age. Two of them now teach singing and our eldest is a composer for brass bands. So I guess it must all be in the genes! May I send you my Best Wishes and hope you all have a happy and peaceful New Year.
