Yesterday we welcomed the Bishop of Thetford to celebrate the Eucharist and license the Revd Andrew Slater as our new Assistant Priest. The Gospel for the day was St Luke's account of the Annunciation to Mary, and in his homily the Bishop invited us to consider the ways in which we are being challenged to say 'yes' to God. We're delighted that Fr Andrew has joined our team and we pray for God's blessing on his ministry as he seeks to say 'yes' to the Lord. He'll celebrate the 10am Parish Eucharist this Sunday and there'll be wine and cake afterwards to welcome Andrew and Jo (back) to the parish.
We had a lovely celebration of the Second Sunday of Advent this morning. The choir sang a beautiful Fauré Mass, in the sermon we thought about how we're invited to cooperate with God in his work of bringing in the Kingdom of his grace, and we welcomed Anne Aves to update us on the work of the John Aves Education Project in the Dheisheh refugee camp outside Bethlehem, which we're supporting this Advent.
At St Mary's, we marked the evening of Advent Sunday with our Advent Procession - a candlelit liturgy of movement and music, during which the choir processes from west to east as the light in the church grows and strengthens, expressing our hopes and yearnings for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Advent hymns and pieces of choral music are interspersed with readings from the Bible which give expression to our Advent prayer: come, Lord Jesus! Here are some photos from the service.
